The Marmottan Monet Museum celebrates the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Immerse yourself in the history of the visual art of sport from 1870 to 1930!
For the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Marmottan Monet museum highlights the visual history of sport from 1870 to 1930, through more than a hundred works from European, American and Japanese collections. From Impressionism to Cubism, this exhibition explores how sport became a modern and avant-garde subject, celebrated by artists such as Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bellows, Metzinger and Gromaire. At the dawn of the 19th and 20th centuries, while Pierre de Courbertin reinvented ancient games, the sport evolved, influencing artists who captured its spirit through different aesthetics. This exhibition analyzes the aesthetic transformations of sport, which has become a major cultural phenomenon between spectacle and practice, thus reflecting the evolution of society towards mass leisure.
